point and shoot coverage

The Kenton Library opened at last today, officially and ceremoniously. The place has been packed all day as residents pore over the library's shiny bookish bling.  The library is around the corner from the Sentinel's office and I literally stopped in this afternoon only because I had to return some Terry Pratchett audio books. Today was a great day for the neighborhood and North Portland, and one that will be well covered by the mainstream press.  If you as a resident have photos you'd like us to post here or link to, please comment below or email them to pub@portlandsentinel.com. -Cornelius Swart

UPDATE: I stopped in as well, and it was packed to the gills with people - and, of course, books. City Council candidate Ed Garren was there, as was Multnomah County Commissioner candidate Karol Collymore and a host of other local luminaries. In the storytelling space, women used puppets to act out Dr. Seuss stories as enraptured children looked on. People perused the shelves, marveled at the extensive DVD collection (which pulls out, file cabinet-style, from the wall) and noshed on mini-cupcakes and lemonade provided by nearby Posies Cafe. The library is shiny, spacious and state-of-the-art (well, at least by Portland standards), and brings Kenton one step closer to being a gentrified destination neighborhood. Action Alert for the North Reach Plan

COMMUNITY CONTENT
When:
02/26/2010 - 3:58pm - 04/01/2010 - 2:00pm

The plan seeks to address how to restore endangered species...not just hold the line or lessen the negative impacts, but actually increase the rapidly declining populations of the most acutely affected species: Salmon and Steelhead in our section of the river. The decline is mainly through loss of habitat, so restoration will have to be through recovery of habitat. It has been estimated by scientists that Salmon need shallow rest & feeding areas near the riverbank about every quarter mile. The plan has been compromised to offer less than that, but it is a step in the right direction since currently the North Reach offers close to no riverbank habitat.

The plan also addresses upland connectivity because we are now seeing alarmingly sharp declines in mammals, once common birds, reptiles & amphibians as well as plants native to our community.

Home is wherever your family is, and Maria’s home is definitely in Oregon now.

She was born in Zacatecas, in the high mountains and plateaus about 350 miles northwest of Mexico City. She was the oldest girl in a family of 11 children.

Today, Maria owns El Tepeyac, a Mexican store and bakery at 1854 North Lombard. El Tepeyac is the hill where the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego, a humble Aztec man. Images of the Virgin adorn the walls of the store – she even appears on Maria’s business card.

Community Content: Legislature passes bill to prevent human trafficking

COMMUNITY CONTENT
Salem – Human trafficking is 21st century slavery, and is closer to home than we might like to imagine.

Located on the 1-5 corridor, Oregon has become a hub for victims trafficked along the West Coast.  In a recent FBI sting conducted in 30 US cities, Portland yielded the second most arrests and victims.

Priority legislation aimed at combating the issue of human trafficking in Oregon was positively received in the State Senate this morning. Senator Diane Rosenbaum carried HB 3623 on the floor where it received unanimous support. Rosenbaum is one of three chief sponsors, joined by Representatives Jefferson Smith and Barton.  Multnomah County Commissioner Diane McKeel - a champion of the issue - brought this bill to the attention of the legislators.

It's that time again, tree huggers: Friends of Trees is comin' to the neighborhood for its annual planting party! This Saturday, join your neighbors and plant some trees in Kenton, University Park, St. Johns and Cathedral Park. Next weekend, bring your shovels and spades to Boise, Eliot, Humboldt and King. (Time and location info on the Friends of Trees calendar)

We've written about these annual plantings in the past, and how beneficial they are for the neighborhoods in which they take place. If you've never taken part, we highly recommend it, for you and your green thumb.

The Kenton Neighborhood Association has won a major victory for cutting down noise from the Portland International Raceway, says Ryan Pittel, the association’s noise subcommittee chair.

At a Jan. 13 public meeting, the Noise Review Board denied PIR a multi-year variance on allowable noise limits in four upcoming racing events. Instead, the board voted to review only 2010’s races.

“My stance was that variances should be applied for on a yearly basis,” Pittel said. “We just wanted a voice.”

Traci Olson does the safety dance

SENTINEL NEWS SERVICE

Dump trucks, tractors, and shovels aren’t the only things shaking at North Denver Avenue and McClellan Street.

Traffic director Traci Olson has stylishly eased traffic through the intersection over the past several months as the Kenton streetscape project has been digging deep into the heart of the business community.

But calling it traffic directing doesn’t do justice to the infectious grooves and smiles Olson adds to the job.

NoPo Postcards: Kenton Lights Up

New fixtures light up our lives

Downtown Kenton's long-awaited and disruptively implemented streetscape project entered a shiny new phase yesterday as decorative street lights popped up along North Denver Ave.  The street lights are being installed by Northstar Electric. Nine lights went up yesterday, and another seven are going up today.  Matt Collins of Northstar says the lights are a traditional "Portland Pole", referring to the old-timey looking light posts, with a moden high efficiency induction lamp head ontop.  The lamps are made by Lumec of Montreal, Canada.

Tell Shell and Chevron: You're Not Done Breathing Yet!

COMMUNITY CONTENT

 Blog post

Enjoy breathing, much? Then you may not enjoy this news: Oregon has the dirtiest gasoline in the nation. And our freeways supply us with nearly 3 times the airborne levels of harmful benzene (one of petroleum's volatile organic compounds, or VOC) as any other region. But wait, it gets worse. What's worse is that our gasoline is stored in 100-year-old leaking storage tanks. These are conveniently located in nearby Linnton--next to many thousands of urban Portlanders--at the Northwest Portland Petroleum Tank Farm. Here are the facts, according to Paul Koberstein of Cascadia Times:

- 7  companies
- 8 terminals
- 586 storage tanks
- 300 million gallon capacity
- 1,394 tons of volatile organic compounds emitted annually

Sunday Parkways 2010 dates announced

SENTINEL NEWS SERVICE

Car-free citizens rejoice! The city's Office of Transportation just announced the 2010 dates for Sunday Parkways, Portland's people-powered festival of fun that connects the city's parks on non-motorized routes and celebrates the many Earth-friendly ways we get around Stumptown. Northeast's Sunday Parkways is on May 16, and North's is June 27. Like last year, the Northeast route will connect Wilshire, Fernhill and Alberta parks; unlike last year, Woodlawn Park is now a stop on the route. North's route remains the same, connecting Kenton, Arbor Lodge, and Peninsula Parks.

The Arbor Lodge Neighborhood Association is holding a meeting on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. to discuss how residents can be involved in the planning of Sunday Parkways. Stay tuned for more info on how you can be a part of this awesome event.

Ellmyer Confronts City Council Over Excessive Political Force In North Portland

Testimony Before Portland City Council 1/13/10

My name is Richard Ellmyer. I am a candidate for the North Portland House seat in the Democratic primary next May. On December 19 I asked each of you to answer the following questions so that I may discuss this issue with voters in North Portland over the coming months:

1. Why wasn't the Washington Monroe High School property offered to the Portland Hope Meadows Corporation?

2. Why weren't advisory committees, similar to those involved in the Buckman neighborhood, created in the Portsmouth neighborhood to discuss and recommend potential future uses for the John Ball School site despite requests from the Portsmouth Neighborhood Association and the ad hoc 195 member Portsmouth Residents Action Committee and the North Portland Business Association to establish such advisory committees?

3. Why were the citizen requests of the Buckman neighborhood acceded to by the Portland city council and those citizen requests of the Portsmouth/North Portland neighborhood summarily dismissed when the issue of the use of surplus PPS property was exactly the same?
